Translation ​

Show the side cart in your store's language, whether you sell in one language or several.

ShapedCart's WooCommerce side cart can be shown in any language. How you translate it depends on which kind of text it is, so it helps to know the difference first.

Two kinds of text ​

The ShapedCart side cart shows two kinds of text:

Product names, prices and variation names come from WooCommerce and your products, so they follow whatever language your store already uses.

Text that stays in English ​

A few pieces of ShapedCart's built-in text are always English, even with a translation installed:

  • After a shopper changes the cart without reloading the page, the label Coupon on an applied coupon, and the labels screen readers use for Remove item, Remove coupon, Quantity, Decrease quantity and Increase quantity. Until then, and again on the next page load, they're shown in your store's language.
  • The screen-reader announcement after a cart change, such as "3 items in cart."

These aren't in the translation files, so a language pack or Loco Translate can't change them.

Store in one language ​

For a ShapedCart store in one language that isn't English, you need two steps.

Step 1: Type your labels in your language ​

ShapedCart's labels start out in English, even on a store set to another language, so type your own versions:

  1. Go to ShapedCart → Side Cart.
  2. Work through each section on the General tab, and replace every label with your language: Cart Heading, the Savings text and Badge text, the coupon labels, the summary labels and Shipping note, the button labels, and the Empty State text.
  3. Click Save changes.

Keep the placeholders, like {saving_percentage} and {qty}, exactly as they are. Only translate the words around them, for example Sie sparen {saving_percentage}.

Step 2: Translate the built-in text ​

The built-in text comes from translation files. WordPress downloads them for you when they're available:

  • Language packs. When ShapedCart has been translated into your language on translate.wordpress.org, WordPress installs the translation automatically. Look for it under Dashboard → Updates → Translations.
  • No language pack yet? Translate the built-in text yourself with Loco Translate, a free plugin. It only takes a few minutes, because there isn't much text.

WordPress uses the language set in Settings → General → Site Language for the storefront. The settings screen follows each admin user's own language, set under Users → Profile.

Why the translation files say "reno-cart" ​

ShapedCart's translation files are named after reno-cart, not shaped-cart. That's ShapedCart's permanent WordPress.org address, from before the plugin was renamed, and WordPress requires translation files to use the same name. So a German translation file is called reno-cart-de_DE.mo.

When a translation tool asks which plugin or text domain to translate, look for ShapedCart or reno-cart. They're the same plugin.

Translate with Loco Translate ​

Loco Translate is a free plugin that lets you translate ShapedCart's built-in text from your WordPress admin:

  1. Install and activate Loco Translate from Plugins → Add New Plugin.
  2. Go to Loco Translate → Plugins and click ShapedCart.
  3. Click New language, pick your language, and choose where to save the file. The System location keeps your translation safe when ShapedCart updates.
  4. Translate each line, then click Save.

Loco Translate builds the list of text from the plugin itself, so you don't need to download anything first. Your translation shows up on your store straight away. If you use a caching plugin, clear its cache.

Multilingual stores ​

On a multilingual ShapedCart store, built with WPML, Polylang or TranslatePress, the two kinds of text work differently.

Built-in text follows each visitor's language automatically, as long as a translation exists for each language, from a language pack or from Loco Translate.

Labels you type are saved as one set, not one per language. Your options depend on the plugin:

  • TranslatePress translates the text it finds on your pages, and that includes ShapedCart's labels. Translate them the same way as the rest of your page text.
  • WPML can translate plugin settings through String Translation, using its option to translate texts from admin screens. ShapedCart doesn't include a WPML configuration file, so you'll need to select ShapedCart's shaped_cart_settings option there yourself.
  • Polylang doesn't translate plugin settings like these, so the labels show in one language everywhere. Choose short wording that works for all your visitors, or wording in your main language.

Keep labels short on multilingual stores

Short labels like Checkout or Cart are often understood across languages, and they fit the narrow cart panel better once translated.

Help translate ShapedCart ​

ShapedCart is translated by volunteers on translate.wordpress.org, under its permanent reno-cart project. If you've translated it for your own store, consider adding your translation there, so every store in your language gets it automatically as a language pack.
